Most famous for its Links series of golf games and cheesy futuristic detective adventures starring Tex Murphy, Access actually began its career by developing games for the Commodore 64 and Apple computers, including the highly underrated Echelon and many precursors of the Links games. Access pioneered the "RealSound" technology, which allowed realistic sounds and speech to be produced by PC speaker, used to great effect in the first Tex Murphy game Mean Streets, which became a blockbuster.Access was bought out by Microsoft in April 1999, a predictable outcome given Access' involvement in designing Microsoft Golf, which was based on the Links engine.
